Bangkok: Taling Ping (ตะลิงปิง)

Hi Hi! I know I have been missing again. No excuse, just that I'm lazy - ha! Anyway, I actually have been keeping track of what I ate but never have inspiration to put it down into entry. I will try hard from now on anyway, to update my blog regularly!

Two weeks ago, I went out for a dinner with my friend at the renovated Central Ladprao. We couldn't figure out what to eat since there are many new restaurants. S fancied Thai dinner so we decided to try Taling Ping. P was actually skeptical coz she heard so many people said it was medicore.

We ordered quite a handful of dishes like deep fried sea bass, spicy salad, stir fried glass noodle with vegetable, crispy fish with chilli paste and spicy stir fried sator (I don't know what it's called in English but it's like this smelly edible seed, I know that in Malaysia and Singapore they also eat this too).

stir fried sator with chilli and shrimp

spicy mushroom salad

crispy fish with chilli paste

deep fried sea bass

stir fried glass noodle with vegetable

Taste was actually not bad. Kinda like home cooking. I would say it's a comfort food but the price was rather shocking. I think all these dishes with rice and drinks, it was about Baht1,200. Kinda expensive for general everyday food, don't you think?

Bangkok: Rabieng Ta-le (ระเบียงทะเล)

Last Sunday I organised a small meeting with my old friends. G suggested that we should eat at a restaurant near her home which located on riverside called "Rabieng Ta-le". We arrived at restaurant around 7pm and it was all packed with families. Riverside restaurant never lost its charm, I suppose.

G was going for healthy stuff so she ordered Deep fried sea bass with fish sauce (ปลาทอดราดน้ำปลา). The fish sauce wasn't just salty but also sweet. It made the dish very satisfying.
Som tam with preserved blue crab

Stir fry veggies

Me and A wanted to eat something spicy so we ordered Somtam with preserved blue crab (ส้มตำปูม้า). It was very tasty! It wasn't too spicy and the preserved crab meat was very sweet. Stir-fry veggie (ผัดยอดผักหวาน) was so so.

steamed seafood with curry paste

Seafood Tom Yum

Next was steamed seafood with curry paste in coconut (ห่อหมกทะเลมะพร้่าวอ่อน). This has to be the best. It tasted perfect and mild. It went so well with rice. I would recommend this and definitely order again if I go there. We couldn't end the night without Seafood Tom-yum (ต้มยำทะเล). It was medicore, good for slurping anyway.

The atmosphere was good but too many mosquitoes. Fortunately, the staff were very nice and attentive. They even offered some mosquito repellent. Although, they missed one order but it was forgiven as we can see they were incredible busy. I would definitely come again, maybe with my family for more yummy food!

Bangkok: Siriwan Hoy Tod (ศิริวรรณ หอยทอด)

Friday is the day I look forward to read "Daily news" newspaper as the famous food critic & chef, Khun McDang will write a column about eating place. It is a good source for me and family to choose place to dine out. This week, he wrote about 'Siriwan Hoy Tod', the restaurant which is famous for, well if you can understand Thai you will be able to guess, 'HOY TOD'. (Hoy Tod is quite similar to oyster omelet, just that it is more crispy and use mussels instead of oysters)

I have eaten at Siriwan before but that must have been like 10 years ago at their original branch at Muang Thong Thani. Fortunately yesterday was my last day as vegetarian so me and mum drove to eat out at one of their branches on Kaset-Nawamin Road today.

We ordered Poached Fish Ball to try as Khun McDang said it was good. It was not the best in my opinion but better than some place for sure. There was no fishy taste or smell in the fish ball. Anyhow, the spicy seafood dipping sauce was very very nice. Just the right taste of spiciness, sourness and sweetness!

I ordered Crispy Hoy Tod in sizzling pan. It was very crispy so people who love crispiness, like my mum, would love this. Although the mussels were quite small but I don't think I can complain since it was very nice.

Mum ordered Kway Teow Kua Kai (stir fry noodle with chicken and preserved squid). I took a taste and it was quite nice. You can smell the scented of sesame oil mixing cooked with noodle which gives out very aromatic yummy scent.

This meal is surprisingly cheap as we paid only Baht190 (only about $7) and we even left some food on plate as the portion was quite huge. I felt very satisfied esp. after my vegetarian life.

Talking about vegetarian life, I feel like it is not about the food. It is more like the will power of how I would "hang in there". The ironic thing is my office provide lunch for staff every working day so usually they would cook a lot of vegetable dish for us. But this past week, they have cooked a lot of meat dishes and even some are my favourite dishes like garlic pork, chicken tom yum etc. It is as if I was being tested whether I have the will power to go on as vegetarian or not. I did not succumb to those delicious food so quite proud of myself for that.

Pathumthani: Prasert Pochana (ประเสริฐโภชนา)

Dad said he'll be paying for the dinner for my belated birthday last Saturday so he asked me to choose what to eat. The thing about my family's favourite food is that we have eaten a lot of decent restaurants but we only go for small variety. It's either seafood or Peking Duck. My mum has a thing for grilled river prawn so I came up with "Prasert Pochana" in Pathumthani, not far from Bangkok, which is famous for their grilled river prawn.

Grilled river prawn is very famous dish esp. in provinces along Chao Phraya river, particularly in Uthaithani, Ayuthaya and Prathumthani. The best thing you look for in grilled river prawns are the orange creamy in the head of prawns. I know it is turn off for many Westerners but this is the best, it's what everyone wants to eat, sometimes more than the prawn eat itself! It is called "มันกุ้ง" (Mun-Gung) in Thai. I have researched around and it explained that Mun-Gung works as liver for prawn. The taste itself is just creamy, that's why the genius ancestor of mine has come up with what we called "seafood dip" to go with it. The dip is definitely only for brave soul who digs spiciness and sourness since it usually made of chilli, lime juice, fish sauce and a tiny bit of sugar for taste. This green-looking spicy dip goes very well with all seafood stuff so don't be surprised when you order seafood in Thailand and they bring out this dipping for you.

We ordered a kilo of grilled river prawns. I was amazed at the fact that they were able to cut prawn in half very neatly which you can see Mun-Gung nicely. Prawns were not over-grilled so the meat stayed soft and yummy. The way we eat Mun-Gung is mix the creamy bit with rice and splash seafood dipping sauce over it for the kick of heat and sourness. It was yummy.

Stir fried scallop with salty eggs and fish Tom Yum

We also ordered stir fried scallop with salty eggs and fish Tom Yum. Tom Yum was served in clear soup instead of the famous milky soup. I like both styles and, for me, the preference of soup depends on mood of the day; if I was looking for a kick, I would go for clear soup but for a chilled out day, the milky soup will be my choice. For the scallop, it was actually very nice. Salty eggs weren't too salty and it blended very well in the dish.

We also ordered spicy glass nooodle salad and sweet and sour fish. The bill for this meal is only Baht2,000. It is very decent considering a kilo of grilled prawns is already Baht1,200. I would say it is a good choice if you don't want to travel far from Bangkok. But if you are willing to travel far for grilled river prawns, I would recommend "แม่ทองชุบ" (Mae Thong Chub) at วัดตราชู (Wat Tra Chu) in Uthaithani which is about an hour and a half drive from Bangkok up north. They serve big-a** river prawns (2 prawns for a kilo). That's my most fave place for grilled river prawns.

Bangkok: Baan Pueng Chom (บ้านพึงชม)

N was craving for 3 smellies dish at Baan Pueng Chom restaurant in Soi Ari so she asked if anyone interested to join her. I have heard about this place but never been to so I tagged along on what supposed to be small gathering dinner turn huge party dinner. The ambience was very homely and relaxing. Our waitress was very nice and funny. She kept suggesting dishes for us never ending and we just ordered them all. I was very bad at taking pictures last night coz I stopped bothering after the third dish as we were so engaged in conversations about Older N's wedding which happening in September. Time to diet then!

The most famous dish of Baan Peung Chom is stir fry glass noodles with 3 smellies vegetables. As the name gives away, vegetables use in the dish have strong smell. Even some Thai might hate them. They are Sataw - สะตอ (or stink bean or petia); which is my fave, strong smell and taste, very strong that you can even smell it when you urine after eating), Cha Om - ชะอม (or acacia pennata); a common vegetable which Thai loves to eat with
Naam Prik or Chilli dip, and กระเทียมโทน which basically is a type of garlic that have been preserved. The dish has very authentic taste and not too bland. One dish is never enough coz we ended up ordering 4 dishes to share among 11 of us.

We have ordered Som tum pla too (ส้มตำปลาทู) to try. It's basically papaya salad mixing with mackerel. If you don't like the taste of fishy mackerel then you would hate this dish but as Thai people, I rarely see anyone hate mackerel so I'm pretty positive most of people wouldn't mind it. If you like your somtum in more subtle context, you'll probably like this dish as well. Actually if you don't like strong and sharp tasting food, you'll like food here. I would say this dish is like easy to eat dish but I would like my food to have more sharp taste. Other dishes worth mentioned about are Tod Mun Hua Plee (ทอดมันหัวปลี) which is deep fried crispy banana flower and beef fried rice. The price isn't too bad coz we must have ordered at least 25 dishes last night and it only costed about Baht3,300 or roughly about USD100. I would probably take my parents to eat here soon coz I know they would enjoy it.
